A follower of the Church of the End Times was sentenced to a year of supervised probation and was ordered get a job, perform community service and write a letter of apology to the Uxbridge Police Department for assaulting a police officer.
Samantha Drury, 19, of Woonsocket, R.I, was found guilty last month of assaulting Officer Steven W. Prior during an altercation Oct. 2 at 41 Murphy's Way.
Judge Michael L. Fabbri ordered Ms. Drury to find employment within 30 days, write and submit a letter of apology to the Uxbridge Police Department and perform 50 hours of community service in an agency related to public safety.
Ms. Drury, however, balked at her sentence, saying the police attacked her when they entered the home at 41 Murphy's Way.
"He attacked me! You can arrest me right now if you want, but he owes me an apology," Ms. Drury exclaimed.
On Oct. 2, police were called to the home of the church's co-founder, Dennis H. Stanley, and his estranged wife, Beth Merrill Stanley. Ms. Merrill Stanley was attempting to help her regain her home after police served a restraining order on Mr. Stanley and trespassing notices were issued to eight female teenagers.
Ms. Drury, one of those teenagers, scratched Officer Prior's forearm, drawing blood, after he climbed a ladder and entered the home through an open bedroom window as police escorted Ms. Merrill Stanley back to her home.
Given that she was adamantly opposed to Judge Fabbri's condition that she submit the letter of apology, her lawyer, Greg Kachegian, asked Judge Fabbri instead to issue a fine and a 90-day jail sentence.
Judge Fabbri held fast to sentence; Ms. Drury has until June 10 to submit the written apology.
